1. Previous Minutes and Action Points


NOHSAC Minutes of 21 and 22 September 2005

Proposed: Selwyn McCracken; Seconded: Evan Dryson

All action points were reviewed. Action points have been completed and no points were carried forward.

2. NOHsac's operations

General


Mark Wagstaffe and Neil Pearce discussed the meeting they attended on the 29th November 2005 at the Health Research Council. This meeting was held to discuss the OHS Joint Research Strategy.

NOHSAC Budget

The Committee discussed the option of increasing the funding to cater for a second report each financial year. The Committee agreed to apply for extra funding.

Meeting Dates


A proposal for further meeting dates was put forward to the Committee. The dates for the 2005/2006 year are confirmed as follows:

15 February 2006

5 April 2006

14 June 2006

9 August 2006

18 October 2006.

ACTION 1 Mark Wagstaffe advised the Committee that Anne-Marie Feyer has offered to host a meeting in Sydney in 2006. It was suggested that Kataraina Maki, who has taken over Carol Slappendel’s role, be invited to a future meeting. NOHSAC Secretariat to price out the cost of holding a meeting in Sydney in February 2006.

Reappointment Process

There are three members of the Committee whose terms end in June 2006. The members in attendance at the Committee were approached to determine whether they seek reappointment. Selwyn McCracken advised that he would not be seeking reappointment. Neil Pearce advised that he was interested in seeking reappointment. Mark Wagstaffe advised that he has spoken to Anne-Marie Feyer, who has indicated her interested in seeking reappointment.

3. NOHSAC'S WORK PROGRAMME

National Profile of Occupational Health and Safety in New Zealand.


Rob Smith and Anna Gribble from Allan and Clarke provided a progress update on their findings to date review. Rob Smith suggested providing the Committee with a list of questions to gain relevant information from the Department of Labour. The Committee suggested providing a debrief from the meeting held at Health Research Council (HRC) on 29th November 2005.

Action 2: Mark Wagstaffe will forward the debrief from the HRC meeting to Allan & Clark.

Review of Schedule 2 of the Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Compensation Act 2001


The committee has been asked to provide the review of the Gradual Process Schedule by Christmas.
Dr Tim Driscoll joined the Committee by conference call to discuss the first draft. The Committee discussed the points raised in the memorandum received from Kevin Morris, ACC with Dr Driscoll. Dr Driscoll will make the necessary adjustments to the report and forward a final review to Mark Wagstaffe by Friday, 2 December 2005.

Action 3: Mark Wagstaffe will send through a copy of Dr Driscoll’s report through to the Committee for a final review.

Dr Tim Driscoll asked for approval from the Committee on writing an abstract on this review for the ICOH conference. The Committee agreed that an abstract be written for the conference. Neil Pearce also suggested that Mark Wagstaffe attend the ICOH Conference in Milan in 2006.

Reviews 2006-2007


In previous meetings, the Committee has discussed completing some in-depth reviews on the following:

Musculoskeletal:

  • diagnostic criteria
  • literature review
  • causes/exposures
  • burden and costs
  • prevention
  • treatment/management
  • research

Fatigue/Stress

  • treatment/rehabilitation.


The future work programme would be included in the Agenda for February

Action 4: Include the above points in the Agenda for February.

4. Meeting with the Minister of Labour


Apologies were received from Hon Ruth Dyson, Minister of Labour’s office on Monday, 28 November 2005.

5. Other Matters

Safeguard Magazine


The NOHSAC Committee have been approached to produce articles on a regular basis for the Safeguard magazine. Mark Wagstaffe will write the first article. Neil Pearce suggested that each Committee member contribute one article per year.

Action 5:Mark Wagstaffe will circulate the request to the group on the topics to be covered.
