New Zealand and Australian Review of Surveillance
and Control of Workplace Exposures
The main objective of the review
is to provide a thorough and critical review of methods and systems used
for the surveillance and control of workplace exposures in New Zealand
and Australia
The review will examine a matrix of surveillance systems taking into account
- (a) the differing categories of exposures noted below,
- (b) the possible types of surveillance methods available, and
- (c) the disease and injury groups of interest.
a) Hazard Category:
- Chemical hazards
- Physical hazards
- Biological hazards
- Psychological hazards
- Other hazards
b) Surveillance method
- routine surveillance systems
- comprehensive surveillance systems
- workforce systems (labour force surveys)
- exposure databases
- registers of substances
- industry surveillance systems
- relevant population surveillance systems
- other
c) Priority attention is to be given to exposures that result in the following (but not limited to) occupational diseases and injuries:
- respiratory diseases
- occupational cancers
- contact dermatitis
- infectious and parasitic diseases
- cardiovascular diseases
- musculoskeletal disorders
- mental or neuropsychiatric disorders
- noise induced hearing loss
This report is being undertaken
in conjunction with the Office of the Australian Safety and Compensation
Council, Canberra. The final report will be released on 25 October 2006.
